Our Sleep Bag Superhero

I think I’m just going to go ahead and theme our January ‘getting back to basics’. It seems like it takes us almost the whole month to recover from the Holiday crazy-awesomeness. Emmett’s pretty adaptable. He’s a happy little guy, and he’s pretty content to be anywhere there’s food and friends to play with. That being said, he’s not always content to sleep… anywhere. When we’re on the road, we do our best to keep bedtime consistent, but sometimes that’s easier said than done… and let me tell you, Em let’s us know when he’s not feeling the bedtime set-up.

We chatted last week about our favourite video monitor, and how it helps us (check that post out here for deets), so we thought this week we’d share two more of tried and tested sleep weapons: the Grobag (a sleep bag), and the Gro-suit (a cold-weather sleeper with quilted arms, meant for pairing with a sleep bag on chilly nights). Finding a cozy, safe, travel-friendly sleep bag for Em has made all the difference in him sleeping consistently, so we’re sharing the details below… Read on!

AFFORDABILITY:

We use our Grobag every night. Every, single, night. And during the winter, we use the Gro-suits more often than not. Grobags typically retail for somewhere between $50-70 CAD depending on size and weight (we’ll chat about the weight details below). Some quick math (because we’re nerdy like that) tells us that if you use your Grobag for roughly 6 months (depending on the age of your babe it could be a bit longer than this), that works out to about 33 cents per wear (not factoring in that you’ll potentially be able to use it again for future kiddos). My daily coffee costs me more than 33 cents per cup… so the idea of not needing an extra cup of coffee per day, because Em’s sleeping better in his Grobag, well that’s a price offset that I can work with!

The Gro-suit retails around $40 CAD for a 2-pack, which puts it inline with a lot of regular sleepers, and in this case, you’re getting the benefit of the quilted arms!

BLUEPRINT:

  • The Grobag is designed with babes in mind. It’s the cozy, cuddly blanket that they can’t kick off or get trapped under. Coziness and safety all in one.
  • Grobag sizes cover all your little sleepers: 0-6 mths, 6-18 mths, and thankfully 18-36 mths! (side note: I was panicking when Em was getting close to outgrowing his 6-18mth size, thinking I wouldn’t be able to find a bigger size… but Grobag’s got us covered mamas)
  • There are a range of weights depending on the temperature of the room that your little one will be sleeping in. The weights are rated in TOG (quick reference: think of 1 TOG as being equivalent to having 1 blanket on your babe), and range from 0.5 TOG (for rooms 24 degrees C or warmer) all the way up to 3.5 TOG (for rooms 12-15 degrees C)
  • They have a travel solution!!! Lord knows, on long car trips, the last thing to want to do is wake your little one up trying to get them into their PJs and sleep bag. Well, the folks at Grobag designed a double zipper and Velcro system that allows a 5-point harness to be used easily with the bags! And did we mention they’re not bulky, so they can be used safely in a car seat?
  • On the 18-36 mth size there’s a zipper cover to detract little fingers from unzipping their own suit. You know, not than my toddler would try to do that. (insert eyeroll here)

CREATIVITY:

We left the entire creativity section to talk about the Gro-suit, because it’s the first of it’s kind that we’ve found! We often struggled when bundling Em up for cold nights. Not because we were worried about his body staying warm – the Grobag takes care of that. But because if we bundled him up in a fuzzy sleeper to keep his arms warm, then his little bod would sometimes get too warm in the Grobag. Well the Gro-suit addresses that exact problem! The Gro-suit sleepers are a nice lightweight cotton, made to breathe well inside the Grobag, but the arms are a double quilted weight! They keep your babes arms warm on a cold night, while their little bods stay cozy inside the Grobag – the perfect cozy combination!

Well, hopefully you know by now that when we find something we love we want to share it! So, we’ve teamed up with our friends at Oyaco to give one of you a set of Gro-suits and a Grobag of your own (over a $100 value!).
