Em’s Monochromatic Big Boy Room

Okay. I’m going to start this post with a little apology for being tardy. I fully meant to have this up like a month ago… but you know, life.

Now that that’s out of the way, we’re super excited to share Em’s big boy room with you!

We had a few goals for the space before we got started:

  1. It needed to function as Em’s room with his crib, but also as a guest room when we have company (one day we’ll finish the basement… but not this year). So we needed to accomodate a crib + a bed.
  2. We wanted the space to feel appropriate for a two year old, but also to be something he could grow into with only superficial changes.
  3. We wanted to do the whole thing on a modest budget.

We’re lucky that we had enough space to use some creative floor-planning and fit the crib and bed both in the room without feeling too crowded (this meant that in the interim we’ve left Em’s bookshelf in the nursery, and just stuck to essential furniture pieces in his big boy room until he’s out of his crib.

Our solution for having the space grow with him, was to use a monochromatic theme (black, grey, white). We can customize the artwork and small touches to make it feel like a toddler room for now, and then swap these things out down the road for more mature feeling bits as it makes sense! Also, the triangles on the wall? They’re wall decals from Urban Walls (not sponsored, we just love them). They stick on and peel off, so if he wants to swap them out for something else in a few years? No problemo.

As for sticking to a modest budget? We scavenged pieces wherever we could! The rocking chair in the corner? Check out this post for all the details on how we DIY’d this special piece. The crib we borrowed from my parents, and the metal frame bed? It used to be hunter green and in my parent’s cottage guest house – we spray painted it black and voila! The only new bits we did purchase were all bought with simplicity and cost in mind! I’ve linked them below if you’re looking for anything similar.

Dresser: IKEA

Mirror, Picture Frames, Wall Decor: Home Sense

Rug: Wayfair (the exact one isn’t in stock anymore, but I’ve linked to some similar options)

Here’s hoping the little guy enjoys years of sweet dreams and bedtime stories in this brand new space!

This Guy!
