Looking for a cozy and cute towel poncho for your kiddos, but not sure you’re willing to spend $70 to make it happen?
We’ve got you.
We made these Turkish towel inspired ponchos from $12 beach towels, and they took about 30 mins to make from start to finish!
So, if you’ve got half an hour, $12 and even beginner level sewing skills, this one’s for you!
Materials:
I used $12 towels from Walmart, that measured 34” x 64” (not including the fringe)
Sewing machine
Scissors
Thread (the same colour as your towel is ideal)
Make It Happen:
To start, fold your towel in half to find the mid-point, and cut a 20-inch wide section from the middle of your towel. You’ll use this for the towel poncho hood, and cutting it from the middle preserves the fringe on the ends of your towel!
Sew the two cut ends of the towel together. Fold the poncho in half along the newly formed seam and measure along the seam to find the mid-point.
Using a bowl, trace a half-circle that’s size-appropriate for your child’s head and then cut the head hole. I used a sweater of each kiddo’s to estimate the hole size, but start small! You can always make it bigger, but it’s tough to make it smaller once you cut.
Take the 20-inch section of the towel that you cut off, and fold it in half. Using a hoodie that fits your child, trace around the hood. Add an extra ¾ inch for a seam allowance and then cut out the hood shapes (you should have two – that folding towel magic!).
Sew the middle seam of the hood pieces, and your seam along the front to form your hood.
Center the hood in your head hole and pin it in place. Once you’ve got it centered, go ahead and sew it in place.
If you want to add snaps to create “arm holes” in your poncho, measure up about 8-inches from the bottom hem and add a snap close to the seam. We left ours open because my kiddos loves to wrap their poncho around them when they’re drying off, but you can add them in a snap! (see what I did there?!)
That’s it! You’ve got a cozy, cute poncho that your kiddos can cozy up in!
