3 Must-Have Pieces of Christmas Decor for Small Spaces

by | Dec 6, 2018 | Featured, Home | 10 comments

It’s that time again!

When we wear full-body fleece jams, drink our bodyweight in hot cocoa and deck every single one of the halls. And trust me when I say, I love EVERYTHING Christmas. But when Christmas rolls around in our tiny abode, it’s also the time where I have to make some tough choices.

I mean, if it was up to me I’d fill literally every nook and cranny with something Christmassy… but then we’d probably have to get rid of our kids, and dog, and we’d have no room to move…

So, I do the next best thing. I choose three key pieces of decor to focus on that add that festive feel, and have a big impact, without sacrificing space!

1.The Tree

We have a faux tree (because I hate the word fake), and I’m going to let you in on a small space tree hack: buy a hallway tree! Ours is tall enough to create presence in the room, but narrow enough that we can tuck it into our small dining room easily. Another hallway tree benefit? They usually come in their own pot/stand, making them easy to tuck into any corner. If you’re really hurting for space, but want to upgrade from tabletop trees, this might just be your solution!

One more tip: We also use a ‘gift bin’ to keep all the presents contained, so no one is tripping over them while we’re walking around the table!

2. The Bannister Bows

Did I mention our house is over 100 years old? No? Well, she has sooo much charm, but she also has her fair share of quirks. One of which is the fact that our stairs are reeeeally tight. Like only one person can walk up them at a time, and you have to be a little bit careful with your head on the way down if you’re over five and half feet tall! Oh and the treads are so worn they’re almost rounded, making them ever-so-slightly treacherous. Like I said… she has charm.

Needless to say, we have to be careful about adding anything to the bannister that a) makes it hard for people to hold the railing, and b) takes up any additional space. But I’m not willing to forego stairway decor altogether! So, my solution is to decorate each newal post, and leave the handrails bare. We went with homemade pompom bows this year because, well… pompoms!

3. The Mantel Garland (and stockings!)

I have to tell you, this is the one space in our house that secretly makes me cringe a bit. Our living room functions for us as a living room, rec room and play room in one. It’s our multipurpose room, and we’re pretty lucky to have a wood-burning fireplace in it!

But, because it’s a class small home 3-in-1 kind of space we have a mantel with a TV mounted above it. It’s a necessary evil, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say it’s a bit of a pain point for me, decor-wise.

Never fear though! I’m not to be deterred when it comes to decor – the mantle is the perfect space to add some festive flair (although if you don’t have a mantel, a sideboard can serve the purpose as well!). The low-profile garland fits nicely under the TV, and we kept the drape up relatively high (away from baby fingers since this is also the room the kiddos play in).
